How do I take care of a red rose in a vase?

Okay. He is a regular clear glass vase. Yesterday, I brought a rose Red school. I was told to cut out the bottom diagonally. So I did and went to wet a paper towel and wrapped it in the bottom of things. Of course, earlier in the morning he was out all day under the burning sun, without water. And since I have brought home, he is now in a vase with water. But I was wondering how I should take care of it so that it can last a little longer. Suggestions?
