In a base of mannitol salt for the bacteria, makes a very strong smell to indicate fermentation?
I can not say I noticed a particularly strong aroma of the MSA (Mannitol Salt Agar) plates I checked. Mannitol bodies fermenting the acid agar (yellow produced lowers the pH and causes a color change in phenol red indicator) Despite the high salt content I've often found false-positive yellow colonies caused by non-staphylococci often Bacillus spp Staph. (Staphylococcus subject usually sought on MSA) has generally not smell strong, I know of no determinative bacteriology test based on the smell to distinguish positive / negative
