Planning a long tour cross-country on a moto ... I think the BMW F650GS: What do you think?
I've been riding for about 3 years now. I had the most dirt bikes street legal. My bike was a fist KLX250 2007 that I put almost 12000 miles one year. I moved to a KLX 400 w / a big bore kit 440. Tons of fun in the woods. Then I had a KTM 2003 200 exc. All were Street Legal and plated, but I've never done more than 50 or 60 miles per day. (Except for the KLX 250, I rode that thing all day around town, but not on highways), I am looking to buy a BMW F650GS take me across the country through country roads and dirt tracks, highways, campgrounds and whatever I may encounter. I know for sure that I would not take the KLX 440 ... too light, no windscreen, vibrates like all hell and its hard to pack equipment. Thoughts? Ideas? Page Previous experience? Thank you!
The BMW will do. It will be very pleasant on the road for a 650, and fairly heavy off-road. Fine for gravel roads and 2-track, but a bit difficult to handle than the going gets rougher. Injection engine will get better fuel than the other 650S. The luggage capacity is not a problem. If you can not pack everything needed for a month or two, then you make way too much crap. I think Bang the KLR650 is best for the buck, and you can load both with luggage available from a number of sources. My favorite in the class, however, is the Suzuki DR650. He is not got quite as roomy with camping equipment, but light Packing is always a virtue. Place a Corbin seat and IMS 4.9 gal. tanks on the subject. I traveled a lot on 650 dual sport. It is more difficult to accumulate high mileage days as it is with a dedicated road bike, but if you continue to 250-400 miles per day and take all the detours and routes of return, you may find you have an excellent adventure.
